OK, So What About the Goals?

In my previous post, I shared the full context of what Beers & Code is about — staying accountable.

I feel like when New Year’s Eve comes around, we all set a bunch of goals — and then drop some of them (or all of them). And here I am, trying to set goals on March 8, 2025 — two months already gone. Shit. 💩

Maybe not lost, per se, but you get the drift. 😅 I had a few things I wanted to do, but I haven’t started — or even worse, I’ve already forgotten about them.

So What About the Goals?

Some of these goals won’t be easy to track — they’ll be more about how I feel or how my family perceives me. But I’ll try to keep track where I can. I considered coding a tracking system, but I’d rather focus that time on shipping something (see goal #4). For the rest, I’ll just keep it simple.

1. Spending More Time with My Family

Like I mentioned in my first post, I’m juggling multiple things at the moment — my main job as a Support Engineer (where the company culture is amazing and respects work-life balance), freelance jobs, and IT management at another company.

I’m not sure how to measure “spending more time with family,” but maybe it’s about having the freedom to pick up my kid from school or help her with something without worrying about losing my job.

I know it sounds crazy — especially in this economy — but I want to give it a try. If other people have figured it out, why not me?

2. Learning How to Code

This one’s tricky to measure. Sure, at some point, I might get classified as a mid or senior developer, but right now, I don’t even feel like a junior.

I know how to create CRUD operations and work with frameworks like Bootstrap, Tailwind, ShadCN, Bulma for CSS, and React with TypeScript, JavaScript, Laravel, and PHP. But would I apply for a job that requires those skills? Not yet.

AI is helpful but tricky — it makes it easy to learn and implement things quickly, but it also makes it easy to get lazy and cut corners. For now, AI is my training wheels, but I’m always checking if my code can be improved.

3. Getting Healthier

This one is definitely measurable — and I’ll get personal here. 😅

I have high blood pressure (HBP) and I’m borderline pre-diabetic (not sure what it’s called in English). I weigh 177 pounds — and I should be around 155 pounds (unless most of it’s muscle… which it’s not 😂).

My goal is to exercise at least five times a week and focus on weight loss (not bulking). After a couple of months, I’ll get some blood work done and post an update.

I’m setting up a Notion page to track this publicly — maybe that accountability will help.

4. Shipping Something Real

This one’s big. How about setting a deadline of two months for an MVP?

I’ll share the general details in future blog posts and maybe post some behind-the-scenes content on Patreon (because bills). If nobody’s interested — well, that fits the universal truth. 😂

But seriously, I have an idea that could help a lot of people. If it works and we can scale it, it could be huge. Two months? Cool.

5. Improving My English

I guess you’ll all let me know how I’m doing based on my mistakes. If people stop commenting on my grammar or pronunciation, I’ll know I’m improving.

Also, getting comfortable on camera will be key. Creating video content will help with both confidence and fluency.

Keeping It Real

That’s it — my list of goals. I know it’s ambitious, but hey, that’s what Beers & Code is all about — figuring things out as I go.
